Decals for 1 version
The Cant. Z. 501 was the first of the flying boats designed by Ing. Zappata for the C.R.D.A. It made its first flight in February, 1934, but it was not until October of the same year that its very good characteristics were displayed when a production model broke the world record flying a distance of 4130 km. The next year, after the French had exceeded that distance, the aircraft flew 4930 km regaining the record. On both flights the pilot was Mario Stoppani. This was the excellent start of the Zappata flying boat which became available to the Regia Aeronautica in 1936 and remained in service until 1949-50 when the last one was demolished. Some aircraft were sent to Spain during the Civil War and some were sold to Rumania in 1937-38. However, the Gabbiano (“Sea-gull” was its officially adopted name) received its baptism of fire during the Second World War: in June 1940 the Regia Aeronautica had, in service a total of 202 flying boats which equipped seventeen (the 141a-148a, 171a and 182a-189a) Squadriglie da Ricognizione Marittima and four (1a, 3a, 4a, 5a) Sezioni Costiere based on the Adriatic, Tyrrhenian Seas and the, Islands. Immediately used for reconnaissance, bomber, convoy escort and anti-submarine roles, they soon proved deficient in both speed and armament and were necessarily replaced by the more modern and powerful 506s. Despite its shortcomings, the Gabbiano was active throughout the war in coastal patrol and escort duties, excelling above all in the air-sea rescue sorties. On account of its saving numerous lives in the Mediterranean, it was nicknamed “Mammaiuto” (which roughly means “Mamma help”). After September 1943, the Co-Belligerent Air Forces employed a number of 501s, based at Brindisi and Taranto, as rescue aircraft.
